Identifying more so with the Republican Party, I was not planning on viewing the Democratic Debate. However, due to my English Composition blog #13 assignment I was required. I actually found pleasure in listening to the topics presented by the 5 candidates, and even with over 2 hours of discussion I feel more time should have been devoted to the topic of gun control.
Bernie Sanders a senator from Vermont has dealt with the NRA for years on the topic. He believes in assault weapon bans for the general public, and shielding the small gun shop owners from law suits that may arise when mentally incompetent individuals cause catastrophic events in society. Senator Sanders stands firmly with supporting manufacturing companies to receive the law suits. He believes in the need for more in depth background checks and mental evaluations for any registered gun owner.
Hillary Clinton our former Secretary Of The State and former First Lady was next on the chopping block in the topic of gun control. She did not give her full perspective on the gun control she would like to see in our great country, only to state that Bernie Sanders control policy is not strict enough.
Bernie then continues with comments of “all the shouting in the world will not keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill”. See Bernie being a resident of Vermont he understands the need for hunting not only for sport, but to feed families across his state and many other states like Vermont.
Martin O’Malley a governor from Maryland is not a supporter of the NRA. He has already passed gun safety in his state. In lieu of the most recent school shooting in Colorado, he stands closely with Hillary’s ideas about stricter laws. Still there is no mention, in detail, Hillary’s plans for gun control. He did mention that hunting traditions could deal with certain changes, but Governor O’Malley does not come from a largely rural state, and may be harder for him to comprehend the idea that some have to hunt their dinner.
The person who really grabbed my attention on the topic was Jim Webb. He is a United States Senator from Virginia, Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, Counsel for the United States House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and Marine Corps officer. He believes about keeping guns from two types of people in our country: criminals and the mentally ill. Leaning more towards similar standards as Sanders, he understands the necessity for background checks and mental examinations before one can own a gun. Senator Webb made the statement of the government officials have bodyguards that are armed with AR’s and the American public has the right to protect themselves as well. At that point I thought I was watching the Republican debate and questioned why he sits on left wing.
Lincoln Chafee a career politician was also vague about how his gun control policy would look like if approved by the senate. His main point was that he would work with the NRA on common sense gun safety.
In the end, all of the candidates are Democrats and sway left wing and by the policies they plan to put into effect determines how far left they go. They want change to some extent in our countries gun control policy. I cannot help but to agree with some points. I do believe that no one should be able to walk into a gun store, pick one out, and leave that same day with gun in hand. There should absolutely be more detailed background checks, and mental health screens. At that point if the person has completed all the necessary processes and is deemed a registered gun owner they should be allowed to buy a damn rocket launcher if they please. With additional rocket ammo for their new found toy. Every American should have the right to protect themselves, and be able to match the weaponry the government that severs them has. I do not agree with Sanders about manufactures being held liable for anyone else’s actions. How can anyone validate the idea that Remington makes guns and ammo specifically for the local gun shop owner to sell to the kindergarten school teacher’s mentally deranged son to go and kill 17 children and 9 adults during school hours because he has mommy issues. Trying to nail a case against either manufactures or gun shop owners would be more difficult if some policies in obtaining a gun permit were stricter. If we are all honest, the majority of gun violence across our country is not being committed by registered gun owners, as the majority are illegal handguns aka "throw always" that are being constantly traded, sold, and stole on our streets. As an active gun owner and shooter I disagree mostly with the restriction the Democratic Party is planning on implementing on law abiding gun owners if the Presidential seat is taken. However, I do agree with the background checks and mental health exams.
